The Position: Group Health Underwriter
Assess client risk, understand strategic implications of competitive carrier/product marketplace, and make sound underwriting-based assumptions to find solutions to meet assigned client objectives.
Understand the changing carrier product landscape.
Maintain good carrier and vendor relationships.
Renew and market carriers for assigned book of clients.
Meet all client deliverable timelines and deadlines.
Analyze client demographics and other data to determine risk and appropriate carrier product solutions.
Calculate regular claims analysis for reporting and benefits benchmarking.
Provide direction to other analysts in the drafting and distribution of Request for Proposals (RFPs) or Request for Renewals (RFRs) and follow up with carriers, as needed.
Analyze and calculate client rates and benefit costs.
Analyze annual renewals and proposals from carriers for accuracy and financial soundness based on all factors.
Negotiate with carriers on behalf of assigned clients.
Participate in product/service quality improvement initiatives, as needed.
Follow process improvement protocols for the department and make suggestions.
Design and create presentation reports for assigned clients.
Ensure accuracy of premium rates and benefits collected from carriers.
Work as a team with Account Managers to understand expectations for meeting deliverables.
Required Skills and Competencies:

Bachelor’s degree in Math or related field, or equivalent education and related training
Candidates must be either US Citizens or Permanent Residents of the US
Two years of experience in the field of health and welfare benefits underwriting or equivalent
Strong problem-solving skills
Exceptional organizational and multi-project management skills
Attention to detail and quality-oriented
Ability to effectively work in a team environment
Good analytical and writing skills
Ability to work in an environment where a wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected
Demonstrated proficiency in basic computer applications, such as Microsoft Office software products
Ability to travel, occasionally overnight
Knowledge of alternative funding methodologies
Pursuing Registered Healthcare Underwriter (RHU) certification and/or taking actuarial exams
Solid understanding of all employee benefit product lines
Strong presentation skills
Ability to effectively articulate and defend processes and methodology to internal and external clients
